Commencement

Spring and summer commencement ceremonies are coordinated through the Office of Student Life. Spring commencement is held in mid-June and summer commencement takes place in mid-August. (For official dates, times, and locations, contact the Office of Student Life).

Although degrees are conferred as part of commencement, diplomas are not handed out at the time of the ceremony. They are mailed to the address given on the Application for Degree form, ten to twelve weeks after graduation. Students close to earning their degree may attend and participate in the university ceremony whether or not they are graduating. However, names of those students who have not filed for their degree will not appear in the commencement program.

Conflict Resolution Services

Conflict Resolution Services (CRS), located in the Erb Memorial Union, is a free and confidential service available to all UO students, faculty, and staff. Services include mediation, facilitation, interpersonal communication coaching, and other related services. The program's workshops present basic conflict resolution skills. Conflict Resolution Services coordinates the Neutral Observer Program, which provides trained observers at campus events. The presence of observers provides for unbiased witnesses in the event that conflict escalates.

Dean’s List

The Dean's List is announced after each fall, winter, and spring term. (There is no Dean's List for summer term.) To qualify a student must be an admitted undergraduate and complete at least 15 credits for the term; 12 of the 15 credits must be graded with a GPA of 3.75 or better. Dean's List status is recorded on qualified student's acadmeic transcripts.

In addition, students who receive Dean’s List honors are mailed a congratulatory letter, signed by the dean of the school or college of their declared major. (Students whose major is undeclared are sent a letter signed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.) Letters are usually mailed, to the student's mailing address, during the fourth week of the following term.

Students who have questions about the Dean’s List should send an email to stl@uoregon.edu. Please include your first, middle, and last name, the last four digits of your student ID number, and the term you have a question about.

Family Programs

The Office of Student Life offers programs for parents and families of students. Its biannual newsletter, Connections, has information for parents and families about the university experience. Special orientation events are organized for parents of new students during IntroDUCKtion and Week of Welcome. Each fall and spring term families of students are invited to spend a weekend on campus enjoying visits to classes, student awards ceremonies, faculty presentations and receptions, and athletic events.

Honors & Awards

The Honors and Awards program solicits nominations, coordinates selection committees, notifies students and their parents of selection, and coordinates a spring awards luncheon during Family Weekend in May. Recipients are selected by members of the faculty, staff, and students whose membership represents: UO Housing, UO Athletics, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office of International Programs, Greek Life, Office of Student Life, Erb Memorial Union, ASUO, and various academic departments. Campus involvement in a variety of contexts and academic achievements are considered heavily in the selection of the individual awards. Selection criteria are available from the honors and awards coordinator in the Office of Student Life.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Educational and Support Services Program

Understanding and acceptance are essential to creating a welcoming environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. This program develops and provides educational services related to homophobia and heterosexism; assists student organizations and academic units in bringing speakers to campus for educational programs; serves as a referral source for and provides consultation to members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community; offers support services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their heterosexual allies; and acts as a liaison between the university administration and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

Non-Traditional Student Support

Nontraditional student families--students over the age of 24, students who are reentering the university after a break, or student parents--are offered support and assistance specific to their concerns by the coordinator of Nontraditional Student Programs.

Sexual Assault Prevention

The Office of Student Life coordinates the Alliance for Sexual Assault Prevention, self-defense classes, courses about preventing sexual assault, and other programs and events designed to prevent unwanted sexual behavior. In addition, the office provides support for survivors of sexual and partner violence.

Student Judicial Affairs

The university's student judicial affairs program is designed to protect the rights, health, safety, and well-being of every member of the university community and, at the same time, protect the educational objectives of the university. The program handles complaints related to academics made against students by other students and by faculty or staff members. A faculty-student committee has primary responsibility for formulating and evaluating student conduct policies and procedures. The program is administered by the director of student judicial affairs.

Substance Abuse Prevention

The Office of Student Life offers programs and services to campus organizations and students who want information about the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs. The office also coordinates and provides information about campus efforts in alcohol and drug abuse education, prevention, and intervention.

University Day

Each May, hundreds of UO students, faculty and staff spend the day cleaning, painting, planting flowers, spreading bark dust, and helping with other campus beautification projects. University Day at the UO began in the early 1900's, but died out in the 1920s. Thanks to enthusiastic student and administration support, it was revived in 1990, and continues each year. University Day is co-sponsored by the Office of Student Life and Facilities Services. For more information, contact the Office of Student Life.
